OTEL Lab Highlights
Accelerate Translation

Accelerate the Translation of New Technology

We focus on rapidly translating innovative optical imaging and therapeutic technologies into clinical practice, working as a highly interdisciplinary team of clinicians, engineers, foundational scientists and graduate students. Our research facility contains both BSL-2+ and regular engineering space, and is within a short walk from orthopaedic ORs and the clinic.

Answer Questions

Answer Foundational Questions

Our research delves into the fundamental mechanisms of infection, biofilm formation, and tissue perfusion. We seek to answer questions that stem directly from the experience of our clinican-collaborators in the orthopaedics, inspiring us to make critical insights in order to advance the field and make an impact.

Equip Practitioners

Equip the Next Generation of Surgeon-Scientists

We provide opportunities for engagement among the entire clinical department, including the training and mentoring of med students, residents, and clinicians. The opportunity to participate in the advancement of cutting-edge techniques provides a unique experience and enhances the orthopaedic care and research goals of the future practioners.

Entrepreneurial Spirit

Rekindle the Entrepreneurial Spirit

By fostering innovation and collaboration, we encourage our team to develop novel solutions and translate them into impactful technologies for the healthcare industry. Our lab is actively engaged in both startups (FWD Imaging Inc.) as well as industry partnerships. Members of the team hold multiple patents and provisional patent applications, with the goal of attracting capital investment to reduce the time it takes for technologies to get into the hands of surgeons and impact patients.

Improve Wellbeing

Improve the Life and Wellbeing of Patients

Our ultimate goal is to enhance patient outcomes through improved diagnostics, treatments, and surgical techniques, leading to better recovery and quality of life. Our team is involved in several clinical trials, including multicenter clinical trials funded by the NIH, to impact both civilian and military populations. We are also in collaboration with a non-profit, Lumine Trauma Foundation, to bring this technology to Eastern Europe where it is particularly likely to make an impact on trauma patients.
